Melkorka cover.jpg

Princess Mæl Curcaig, better known as Melkorka, is a curious and stubborn young woman, excited for her future. On the morning before her introduction to her future husband, she sneaks away to a nearby monastery to glimpse a treasured possession her father intends to give her and her betrothed on their wedding day. Unfortunately for this young princess, she is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When Vikings attack the monastery, the princess and her companions are captured and sold into slavery as thralls (enslaved people) in Norway. Desperate to find some control over her situation, Melkorka sinks into a deep silence, convincing her captures she is mute. She maintains her silence through years of abuse, betrayal, and hardship until one day, a ray of hope fills her life with a greater sense of purpose and a reason to live again. The tale of the Thrall Prinsessa is one full of love, hate, forgiveness, and the power of self-determination.

Bringing the Settlement Age of Iceland to Life Through Strong Female Characters

Alfreða Jonsdottir is a master at bringing the obscure lives of women in history into focus with her riveting historical fiction novels. Melkorka: The Thrall Prinsessa’s Saga is her first novel, telling the tale of the historical figure: the Irish Princess, Mæl Curcaig. Melkorka was a real person whose story is documented in the Laxdæla Saga and in Landnámabók or the Icelandic Book of Settlements. While we know some facts of her life, the depth of her motivation and resistance has not been explored until now. What could drive a steadfast soul to break her vow of silence? Read the book to find out!
